PG&E will soon begin offering a competitive new electric rate aimed at promoting economic development by making it possible for eligible employers to keep, expand or launch new operations in California rather than leave the state. At AT&T Park on Saturday (June 22), PG&E surprised a San Francisco student with the news that she had won a 2013 Bright Minds Scholarship, a renewable award worth up to $30,000 a year. Also, PG&E honored an Oakland teacher as its Bright Ideas Inspiration Teacher of the Year.

PG&E wants to continue to see sustainable growth in the solar market but the utility believes it’s time to reduce or eliminate the subsidies provided by customers who don’t have solar to those who do. Daniel Hardin’s road has been a tough one. He never met his father, grew up in foster care and then tended to his ailing grandmother until she died. That meant delaying his educational pursuits. Now PG&E is giving the 28-year-old a boost with a $30,000 renewable Bright Minds scholarship. He plans to attend San Francisco State and hopes to become a civil rights attorney.
