Laurel Harrop has long wanted to own a green business. She did that, establishing a company that started with recycling scrap metal. Now she’s working with PG&E to recycle tens of thousands of street lights being converted to LEDs. Instead, the Skyline High School senior from Oakland took part in the four-week internship this summer. The program was held in six cities throughout PG&E’s service area.

Back in 2003, all but one of PG&E’s employee resource groups had two executive sponsors who provided the ERG leaders with advice and guidance. PrideNetwork, one of the nation’s oldest LGBT employee organizations, was the one without an executive sponsor and never had one since forming in 1986. That is until Karen Tomcala, vice president of regulatory relations, volunteered to be the organization’s executive sponsor in 2003 — 17 years after the group’s debut.

The Asian ERG at PG&E formed more than 30 years ago and has grown to expand both its employee base along with its community involvement. The group helps internally with PG&E company initiatives and provides annual scholarships to students.

This is the third straight year PG&E has earned distinction on the list and marks an improvement from last year’s overall ranking of 39th place.
