In Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento, 210 teens spent their summer working as part of PG&E’s Better Together Summer Jobs Program. The interns completed the six-week program and celebrated with graduation ceremonies where they were each given a surprise gift.

PG&E’s vegetation management program has stepped up to help: It has partnered with California ReLeaf, a nonprofit that promotes planting and care of trees, to give $25,000 in Arbor Day-related grants to nearly a dozen community organizations across the service area.

Youth Leadership Bakersfield, a program offered by the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, recently brought 33 students out to PG&E’s service yard to learn about energy careers. Students watched linemen demonstrations, learned about electric safety and PG&E careers.

With a focus on safety, PG&E gave out 80 complimentary Valentine’s Day balloon bouquets to customers at Log Cabin Florist in Bakersfield. The event stressed latex balloons as an alternative to metallic balloons, which were responsible for 429 power outages in PG&E’s service area last year.

In a surprise announcement at North High School in Bakersfield, two high school students learned they would be going to Kenya to deliver solar suitcases they helped build. PG&E will cover all expenses for the 12-day trip with the nonprofit WE Charity as part of its Solar Suitcase program.

On Tuesday, PG&E held a workshop at Bakersfield’s Mercado Latino that helped celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and provided information to Spanish-speaking customers about energy savings and programs.
