10,000 Miles of Undergrounding: From a Bold Idea in 2021 to Significant Progress in 2023
PG&E is on pace to put 350 miles of powerlines underground in 2023, bringing the total since the 10,000-Mile Undergrounding Program was unveiled in 2021 to 600 miles.
Underground overhead lines make the grid safer and more resilient to climate change and mitigates the threat of equipment-caused wildfires. As crews put more and more lines underground, the growing scale and efficiency is reducing the cost per mile.
Plus, undergrounding lines means less needed tree work and maintenance of overhead lines, which means it’s more affordable in the long run.
