Celebrate California Arbor Week by Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place
Join us and spread the word to your community
In celebration of California Arbor Week taking place from March 7-14, PG&E is offering guidance in planting trees safely so customers and their families can enjoy them for decades to come.
New trees benefit both the environment and our communities. They clean the air and provide shade on hot days. Access to green space has also been shown to improve wellbeing. But to thrive, trees and plants need space to grow above and below ground at a safe distance from utility lines and equipment. PG&E’s Right Tree, Right Place resources are available to help customers plan a successful Arbor Week project.
When trees grow too close to overhead powerlines, they can cause power outages or spark an ignition. Underground, plants blocking access to a gas pipe or electric line can damage equipment or delay emergency response. Planting the right tree species in the right location keeps tree branches, limbs and roots clear of electric powerlines and gas pipelines.
“We want our customers to enjoy strong, healthy trees – and that starts by planting trees a safe distance from utility lines. Safe placement now could also avoid future trimming and removal of unsafe trees and other vegetation. Together, we can make our neighborhoods greener while ensuring reliable electric and gas service for our communities,” said Kelly Herzog Williams, Vegetation Management supervisor.
PG&E’s downloadable planting guides identify which trees are best for certain locations and show safe planting distances. They also include tips for growing a healthy tree. Customers should always call 8-1-1 at least two days before any digging project so crews can mark underground utility assets to avoid, free of charge.
